Walter G. Ranson



Florence, SC- Walter Gilmore Ranson, 87, passed away peacefully at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, Dec. 18, 2017.

A funeral service will be Thursday, Dec. 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the mausoleum chapel at Florence Memorial Gardens. Entombment will follow. There will be a time of visitation from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. before the service.

Mr. Ranson was born in Buckingham County, Virginia, the son of the late Burnice Gilmore and Nettie Victoria Robertson Ranson. “Walt” attended the University of Richmond before serving in the US Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict. He later graduated from the University of Virginia with a Civil Engineering degree and went to work with E I DuPont Wilmington, Delaware. While with duPont he was assigned to several Engineering Construction sites including New Jersey,Londonderry,Northern Ireland, Luxemburg and Hamn Germany.On returning to the US, he went to the Old Hickory,Tennessee site. His final move was to the Florence, SC plant in 1978 where he retired in 1989. After retirement he was active in civic affairs and was a co-founding member of the West Ebenezer Community Assoc.,promoting expansion of Pine Needles Rd. He was also a member of the Sertoma Club and member of the Pee Dee Seniors Golf Assoc.“Walt” was a quiet man of faith in God and attended Ebenezer Baptist Church. He had great integrity in life and loved and cared for his family.

Surviving are his wife Betty Jane “BJ” M. Ranson; three sons, Don (Amanda) Ranson, Walter Andrew (Dioni) Ranson, Carlton Stuart (Jamie) Ranson; a brother, Lyle H. (Jeanette) Ranson;Grandchildren, Lucy Jane Ranson, Benjamin G. Ranson and several wonderful nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by two brothers,John E. Ranson and Garland T. Ranson.
