Obituary


Timmonsville, SC- Dorothy Anderson Walkup, 93, died at the hospice house in Florence On Dec.12, 2017.

A funeral service will be Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Timmonsville. Burial will follow at Byrd Cemetery, Timmonsville. The family will have a time of visitation from 4:30 to 6:30 Friday at Layton-Anderson Funeral Home.

Dorothy was born in Cades, SC, the daughter of the late Lonnie and Minnie Benton Anderson.She graduated from Sardis High School and attended Winthrop College. She was married to the late William Walkup in June 1944 and settled in Timmonsville following WWII. She was a homemaker before joining Pee Dee State Bank as a teller. She worked there until her retirement in 1986. Dorothy was active in the Book and Garden Club and the Fine Arts Club and with her Bridge Club and the Carolina Garden Club before they disbanded. She was an active member of Timmonsville Presbyterian Church where she served as Treasurer. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and friend. She astounded all of her family with line dancing at her granddaughter’s wedding in September. Many cell phones captured the event. She loved butterflies and flowers and appreciated all of nature. She enjoyed going to the beach even though she was afraid of water. Dorothy enjoyed travel and never missed an opportunity to see something new. She had a “bucket list”of places to visit and crossed off the last item with a visit to Mackinaw Island in September.

Surviving are two sons, William C. “Bill” (Joanne) Walkup, Jr. Myrtle Beach, Richard D. (Janet) Walkup, Florence; a daughter, Linda W. (Tom) Skinner, Charlotte, her grandchildren,April, John, Will, Sam, Emily, James and Helen and a great grand-child, Irelyn, and her sister-in-law, Alice P. Walkup. She is preceded in death by two brothers, J. Aldrich and Marion L. Anderson.
